I'm seeing a lot of stamps around that tell people not to draw fan-art of popular cartoons, video games, movies, or anime. I've seen a lot of these stamps telling that its "cheap" "easy" and "commercial".
I don't agree. Art is art. It doesn't matter if a person is drawing there own Wolf Character, or Toboe from Wolf's Rain. They still drew a sketch, outlined it, colored it, and shaded it. I've seen some of those fan-art sketches of Naruto or whatever. I can tell you, those couldn't be "easy" with complex shading and so forth. And cheap? I'm guessing that means being cheap as in easy to get popular. What? Are you blaiming them for being popular? They didn't make themselves like that. Other people looked at the picture and favorited. Theres a whole nother compain going on not to blame the artist for pictures that reach the front-page.
And "commercial"? Most people arn't drawing fan-pictures to sell something. Most are doing it because they like the character. Jeez, and what kind of argument is that? Art drawn to sell is lesser than art drawn for fun? I don't see these people bombarding people who sell prints.
So, I would advocate people to make their own original characters, or even fan-characters. I think its fun, and nifty to look at. But I'm not going to go attack the people who don't. They still drew it! Why do you have to make original characters to be a "true artist"? An artist makes pictures or music. I think its just mean to put art on caste system. Its all hard work, dangit. And anybody who draws a picture of Sonic is just as much artist as somebody who draws their Own character. I would say, they're missing out, but they arn't "wrong" and not "true artsist".
I would also like to say, I useallly see this related to popular things at the moment. (Invader Zim, Pokemon, Avatar, Sonic, Death Note, Naruto, FF7, Kingdom Hearts, ect...) I never see this related to other "fan-arts" I see. Phantom of the Opera? The Wizard of Oz? Macbeth? Cinderella? Sleeping Beauty? Alice in Wonderland? Those seem to be "acceptable" art.
So, if you think that fan-art is just as much as art, and isn't "cheap" "easy" or "commercial", use this stamp.
I agree. And even if it was supposedly cheep, easy and commercial here is the thing: Since original art doesn't have the same marketing luxury as fanart, it is then pointless to make if it goes under the radar. By this I don't mean that original artwork can't sustain itself on its own. I mean that sometimes you have to use fanart as bait to let people know how talented you are. It is sad, but true. There is a difference with drawing a copyrighted character like Mario just standing there and making a incredibly detailed painting of the mushroom kingdom with its characters, good coloring and good composition.
This is fanart too [link] but you look at that picture and tell me it is cheap. This is a gigantic difference than this, [link] You tell me which one could hold up on its own as much as original work because of how well made it is. The "lack of creativity because of fanart" argument is also perplexing.

However, there is a spelling mistake in the Stamp - "Tottally", should be "Totally". I agree with your points.
Thank you!
